Bridges To Peace
In September 2013, 100 Seeds representing 13 schools in Maine marched across Memorial Bridge Sunday, proclaiming their support of Seeds of Peace and raising money and awareness about the organization's mission. The Seeds were joined by several members of the Maine Seeds Steering Committee along with Seeds of Peace staff in their march. It was the second year a group of Maine Seeds marched across a bridge: in 2012 teens crossed a small wooden bridge in Otisfield, at a Seeds of Peace camp. This year, Seeds plan to march again in September 2014.
The Bridges to Peace Global March in September 2013 was designed to raise funds to support Maine’s Seeds of Peace and its network of young peacemakers in conflict regions. Bridge marches also took place in New York City and London, among other cities.
After the early morning march along the sidewalk of Memorial Bridge, the Seeds also participated in a day-long dialogue in Hallowell.
Governor Paul LePage also marched with the Seeds. He wore a golden T-shirt as well, and gave a speech to the Seeds from the steps of the building as the teens prepared to begin their march. He spoke to them about his connections with the organization over the past 2 1/2 years and told them the leadership skills they were learning would be valuable in everything they do. “One or two of you may be standing here for the next generation,” he said, telling them to absorb the lessons they learn and grow in self-esteem. “You lead the pack,” he told them.
The Bridges to Peace effort, which started in 2011, has raised $250,000 globally so far. The most recent Bridges to Peace in August
raised $2,075.
