The Seeds of Peace international Camp
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase "each other" doesn't make any sense."
-Rumi, 13th Century Poet
The Seeds of Peace International Camp, located in Otisfield, Maine, is a Summer camp that brings together youth from all over the world to build leadership skills, have dialogue sessions, and develop relationships with one another that cultural awareness and peace.
The first camp session brings together youth from the Middle East, South Asia, and the United States. These young people engage in dialogue regarding the current conflicts in these regions while also building leadership skills.
In 2000, Seeds of Peace adapted its internationally-recognized conflict resolution and youth leadership program to launch its first domestic project. This second session at camp focuses on intercommunal tensions in Maine. Historically one of the more homogeneous US states, Maine is now home to growing communities of refugees and asylum seekers, primarily from Africa and Asia. While at Camp, about 100 Seeds representing 14 schools throughout the state of Maine develop leadership skills and also engage in dialogue sessions each day that allow them to discuss issues they see affecting their local and school communities, such as racism, sexism, bullying, and poverty.
In addition to dialogue, the youth also engage in activities such as sports, swimming, arts, and music.
While the Summer Camp is a huge part of Maine Seeds of Peace, Maine Seeds only begin their experience with the two-week session at our Camp in Maine. After they return from Camp, there are year-round local programs that enable them to develop strong relationships built on mutual trust, and the skills needed to engage others in their schools and communities to promote religious and cultural understanding.
