2014 Maine youth summit on education: Educate me!
The second annual Maine Youth Summit on Education: Educate ME! took place on March 8th at the Portland Public Library.
This goal of this event was to provide a place for Maine Seeds to discuss the educational system in Maine with students, teachers, school administrators, and key policy makers. This year’s event focused on four topics as they related to education in Maine:
1. Education and the Economy
2. Universal Standards
3. Disabilities
4. English Learner Programs
These interrelated topics were chosen by Seeds Youth Leaders directly resulting from their personal experiences, research and the two previous Youth Charters presented in 1999 and 2013. An updated and more solution based Youth Charter will be presented to lawmakers and the public culminating from this years Summit.
This all day event provided interactive ways for students to share their ideas about education and gave them the leadership tools and avenues to make their schools better. Key lawmakers and educational experts participated in a collaborative effort at creating a platform for the 2013 Maine Youth Charter, as well as a stepping-off point for the creation of the 2014 Youth Charter. Politicians such as Senator Angus King, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Congressman Mike Michaud, and gubernational candidate Eliot Cutler were involved in the event either through video presentations or by actually attending the event in person and giving speeches to the students.
In addition, a panel of school officials and teachers, such as Lisa Cronin, a teacher at Dexter Regional School, Emmanuel Caulk, the Portland Schools Superintendent, and Derek Pierce, principal of Casco Bay High School, spoke about School Standards and the Economics of Education from their perspective. Students asked meaningful and important questions of all three panelists, resulting in a complex dialogue regarding Maine's education system.
Overall, this opportunity was an extremely important step to integrating youth voices into the decision-making process in the State of maine.
